Just a little bit dark is the intentionally provocative title of Fausto Gilberti’s new solo exhibition at Ronchini Contemporary Art in Terni. Gilberti (Brescia, 1970) won the Cairo Prize in 2007 and, among the artists of the Italian scene, he is the one who better interprets the language of drawing – that in his works becomes painting – in a truly contemporary and intriguing acceptation.
Fausto Gilberti knows how to seize the most paradoxical aspects of society and tell them with irony and sarcasm. His narration is never too explicit and has no didactic intentions; it nevertheless highlights the contradictions and paradoxes nursing in the day-to-day life.
Slight cone-shaped little men, with big and goggling eyes, flat and static bodies, puzzled and bewildered looks, as if unmasked in a moment of complete perplexity - essential images, figures reduced to the minimum are silhouetted on white pages where the setting is indefinite most of the times. There is no color, what predominates is the contrast between the light background and the black trait of the characters drawn on paper with a pencil or using oils on mdf. In his black humor, Gilberti quotes real news items – like the Cielo Drive committed by Charles Manson’s followers in the animation video “10050 the psycho posse”, 2004 – or horror tv series plots such as “The secrets of Twin Peaks” to whose protagonist, Laura Palmer, is dedicated his first series of works.
The music – Gothic and metal – is another standard feature of Gilberti’s works and is the expression of a deep bond with the dark-rock world, starting from the titles, “In ictu oculi”, 2008, “St John the Baptist and death”, 2008, “Come save us”, 2008. Evidence of this interest is found mainly in his work in progress “Rockstar”: the mopheads, little felt tip drawings, of which some “episodes” are exhibited in Terni, together with two new big-size canvases.

On the occasion of the exhibition Ronchini Arte publishes a monographic volume documenting the last ten years of work of the Brescia artist, with a critical text by Luca Beatrice and a conversation about rock, food, art and other amenities between Fausto Gilberti and the singer and guitar player Omar Pedrini.
